SPORTS & SOCIAL MIXING SOUTHERN, LATIN & ASIAN

Are you an addictive personality? Can’t have just one of anything? Hiding and hoarding from your loved ones? Don’t go here! Just say no Nancy!

What are you talkin’ about you ask. I am talking about the Ahi Tuna Tacos at Sports & Social in Suntrust Battery Park. During a recent recon trip we stopped in to check it out mid morning on Valentines Day.

Our first visit and we didn’t really have any expectations. We were not the first in there; a few other tables were already getting their Valentines Day on. Since it was Brunch, we ordered a Bloody Mary.

Bloody Mary at Sports & Social…even the bartender took a picture…I know right?

GREAT BLOODY MARY WITH PIG

Well you see where I’m going here. The Bloody was so pretty that the bartender took a picture himself while we laughed about the big piece of pig stuck in on the side.

Pig….hmmm…I am not sure I ever saw that before but pig goes with everything right? It was a delicious addition with the smoke, crunch and texture. He makes a gosh darn good Bloody Mary.

I looked around; the place has a distinct beachy vibe which the music somewhat supports and the palm trees and big screen beach with water feature adds to.

Good idea to have the beach feature running when a game isn’t going on at SunTrust Battery Park

BEACHY FUN VIBE AT SPORTS & SOCIAL RESTAURANT

We were seated in a comfy bright red booth at the windows so we could see what was going on outside. There are nice design details throughout the place including mesh metal screens and retro light fixtures.

It is a fun mixture of Southern diner meets latino beach club meets asian minimalist. The menu reflects this as well-they have their branding down pat.

We peruse the menu and decide tacos are going to be the focus of our first time experiment; pulled Pork Tacoitos for him and Ahi Tuna for me. The descriptions sounded luscious.

SERVING YOU ADDICTIVE TACOS IN BATTERY PARK

You saw the pic above. They know what they are doing. They just plop down a dish of addictiveness right in front of you and wait to see what’s gonna happen.

I tried my husband’s pulled pork first. Just popped the whole thing in my mouth at once which totally shocked him. He laughed and said I can’t believe you did that!

It was so good. The pork with the slaw with the taco shell with the crema of avocado. Really super. Than I attacked the other dish.

The tuna was so beautifully sushi fresh and tender. The pineapple added the sweetness and the texture with the crunch of the fried won ton shells. Well, just plain ole addictive OK?

The only criticism/suggestion I would have is to replace the fries on the side (i know that is the Southern part) with the asian noodles I saw on another dish on the menu. But let me also add that the fries were the best I have ever had in a restaurant-hands down!

TAKING OVER THE TAVERN NEXT DOOR

There was lots of banging and hammering going on and there was brown paper covering all the windows of the sadly closed Todd English Tavern (I love this Chef-his cookbook The Figs Table rocked my roasted beet world). I can’t figure out why it closed although I do know there was a less than gracious review; we normally support our own better than that down here in the South!

Turns out that Sports & Social is going to take over the space and add it to their already expansive square footage. Coming soon apparently.

This place must be a really fun hang out when a game is actually going on and you don’t have tickets but it is up on that big screen and the crowd goes wild! This would also be a great space for an event or party of any kind.

YOUR LATEST ADDICTION

Tacos. Who knew? I know…you think it won’t happen to you. That’s OK! Just go there and check them out. It’s a fun place and we definitely plan on returning soon.

I think you would enjoy it too. You might also enjoy reading other blogs under Edible Fare and hey, don’t be a stranger! Let me know if they got to you too and what other addictions you might have OK? Until next time…

Cheers,
