How You can Stay Fit while Traveling

HEALTHY CHOICES

Staying fit and healthy while traveling can be a challenge. We aren't in familiar surroundings and our routines may be disrupted by jet lag or lack of time.

However, no matter the reason for your travels, there are ways you can continue to meet your wellness goals and still have fun. This post will center around a few tips you might want to consider the next time you are packing your bags.

HAVE A BASIC WORKOUT

So long as you have a basic routine, you can stay fit anywhere. The added bonus of travel means that you also have new scenery to act as motivation.

If your schedule is tight, simply find some time to do squats, pull-ups, and push-ups. Use your environment, like trees, desks, or even your suitcase.

Depending on your location, you could also speak to hotel or hostel staff for additional advice. This approach can be complemented with easily-transportable equipment like jump ropes and resistance bands. You could even use a couple of water bottles for weight work.

MANAGE YOUR DIET

The basis of staying fit is a nutritious diet. Prioritize lean proteins, like chicken and eggs, and plenty of vegetables. This can constitute a highly-filling diet, and such ingredients are sufficiently available in most places you travel. It will mean you won't have to rely on cheap carbs like rice and pasta.

Staying fit will also require regular eating throughout the day to keep energy levels stable. Look toward healthy snacks like fruits and nuts to supplement your main meals.

If you're travelling by vehicle, it may be a good idea to stock up on basics like peanut butter, oats, and almonds as snacks. Also, if you opt to stay in a vacation rental instead of a hotel, you’ll find it easier to stay on track with your eating since you’ll have your own kitchen.

While keeping to your nutrition goals on vacation is important, it’s also necessary to have some moderation in the mix. Don’t limit yourself from trying some of the local fare and making the most of your trip. A few fun meals here and there are worth it when you’re on vacation.

STAY ON FOOT

One of the best ways to stay fit while traveling is to go by foot. It's easy to miss out if you opt for taxis, buses, or trains. Instead, save a few dollars by exploring on foot all while you stay active.

If you're going on vacation, you could look for city apps or free walking tours to give extra perspective to your walks or jogs. Plan for morning routines so that you can free up the rest of the day for more leisurely activities.

Apply the on-foot mindset as much as you can by taking stairs, hiking in nature, and sightseeing.

KEEP IT FUN

Staying fit can depend on how fun your activities are. Whether you're on vacation or a business trip, it's still a good idea to look into local events. There is often plenty to do and certainly enough for you to adapt to how you stay active.

You could take dance lessons in Spain, practice Muay Thai in Thailand, kayak in Colorado, or simply bike through certain Atlanta areas. Don't hesitate to try to involve yourself locally.

Even if that's a game of baseball or soccer in a park, it wouldn't hurt to see if you can participate. Some websites may even list activities and events and can be quite accommodating to new people. You may make new friends along the way and introduce yourself to different and fun ways of staying fit

WITH YOUR DOG

Traveling with a dog can be a true joy, and a great opportunity to bond and stay fit together. Before you travel, check online for pet-friendly places to stay and visit.

Just about any location with a dog park, campground, hiking trail, or dog-friendly beach is an opportunity to explore and get fit with your pet.

Pack generously to aid your pet in your chosen activities, such as clothing and booties, a first-aid kit, an LED collar, and collapsible bowl. It will also be important to keep up as much of the routine that your pet is familiar with to minimize any stress they may experience.

However, new places also mean new opportunities for more varied exercise. In particular, biking, hiking, and trail running offer a chance to explore with your furry companion.

CONCLUSION

Being fit doesn't have to be sacrificed to enjoy traveling. In fact, it may help you explore and connect to local people, and do things you would not have considered. Whether you are on a business trip, a vacation, or have taken your dog with you, you will hopefully find that sticking to healthy routines adds to your experiences.

A MESSAGE FROM ARTSY:

If you liked what you read, you might also enjoy other blog posts under Guest Bloggers and Just Because on my website. I have learned a lot of lessons during this pandemic. Part of that is taking care of yourself as well as others in your family and friends circle.

Keeping yourself fit and healthy is a good thing and it doesn’t have to stop because we are beginning to travel again. Maybe like me you have put on the Covid 10, 20 or 30! I just joined a gym so I can start working my way back to normal and put my fat pants in the back of the closet where they belong.

I’m not good at being stoic during stressful times. I throw myself into organizing but I also have a black sense of humor and try to see the funny in almost anything. I wrote a couple of blogs about these times that addresses the need for laughter.

Laughter is the best medicine after all. Pick some exercises that also make you laugh like dancing wii games with your kids or playing hide and seek with your pup in the park. Enjoy the video below which will give you some more fitness tips when traveling as well.

Look for my next blog posts on my latest explorations for who to see, what to eat and where to go. Until then…
